Famous statue flipped over by flooding near 'Fallingwater' house

Heavy rain overnight caused flood damage on the property of the Fallingwater house Saturday.

Bear Run, the stream that flows below the landmark, began to flood and overflow, according to the museum's executive director.

The flooding did not cause any damage to the interior of the house, but its most famous statue was flipped over and submerged underwater.

“Mother and Child I,” sculpted by Jacques Lipchitz, was turned over by the floodwaters. It had stood in the plunge pool near the house prior to the heavy rain.

The executive director said the wall was taken out by the flooding, which tipped the statue over.

A log hit the wall and cracked the stoneware. When that cracked, the statue flipped over. Crews safely removed the sculpture from the water and were assessing it for damage Saturday.

Trees by the guest house were also damaged, according to the original Facebook post.

"We're in this deep valley so the stream rises very quickly. It doesn't have anywhere to go but up," said Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater.

Fallingwater was designed by architecet Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. Since its inception, the house has become a landmark. Tourists frequently visit the structure located in Fayette County.

Due to the flood damage, tours were under a 30-45 minute delay.

The last storm that damaged Fallingwater was more than 60 years ago, in 1956, the executive director said.
