Fate of local Catholic school remains uncertain

Some parents are saying the Pittsburgh diocese is setting them and their efforts to save their small Catholic school up to fail.

Parents at St. Bartholomew School in Penn Hills said they have their children enrolled at other schools for next year just in case St. Bart's closes.

"We're given no information. There's been a lot of deceit and we just really feel disheartened by all of this," said Adrienne Guerke, a parent.

Four weeks ago, Guerke and other parents were told that they needed to raise $200,000 and recruit several new students or the school's future would be in jeopardy.

Parents recruited a few new students, but said that the parish and diocese wouldn't help get the fundraising campaign off the ground.

"They set us up to fail. They gave us some false hope, which is worse than any of this," Guerke said.

Channel 11 reached out to the Pittsburgh diocese, which would not confirm if St. Bart's was closing. The diocese said that kind of information is first shared with teachers, parents and parishioners.

With just two weeks left of school, parents said it's time to tell everyone.

"The teachers are actually in a worse position than we are because we have other opportunities for education in this area," Guerke said. "They may not have other opportunities for employment."
