Fire burns through row houses as street turns to ice

EAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Firefighters battled flames Thursday morning at row houses in East Pittsburgh.

The fire was reported about 2:30 a.m. on Howard Street, which turned to a sheet of ice as firefighters worked to put it out.

Three row houses were destroyed by the fire, which caused a back wall to collapse and part of the roof to cave in.

A neighbor told Channel 11’s Gabriella DeLuca that she heard an explosion and saw flames and smoke pouring from the homes.

Julie Chantz, who lived in one of the homes, woke up to flames coming from her neighbor’s window.

No one was injured, but five people who lived in the homes were displaced.

“Very glad we all got out. We all look out for each other. It's a small community-type unit. I know we will get through it,” Chantz said.
