First arrivals from Las Vegas land in Pittsburgh with stories of terror

An emotional scene unfolded at Pittsburgh international Airport on Monday afternoon as passengers got off the first plane to Pittsburgh from Las Vegas after the airport there was reopened following a mass shooting that killed nearly 60 people and injured more than 500 others.

“It was just mass people just running everywhere,” said Jackie Fabiszewski. “Like I said, we couldn't get out of the hotel -- people were barricading themselves in rooms. It was just complete and utter chaos.”

None of these passengers saw the shooting but Murphy heard it from her nearby hotel.

"It was crazy. It was like a movie, like a scary movie,” said Amy Murphy of Lawrenceville as she wiped away tears. “I have a 17-year-old; I wanted to make it home to him.

“I heard probably five or 10 gunshots real fast, then I heard another five or 10 and I went into the hotel and then people just started running everywhere,” she said.

“They had alarms going off at her hotel telling us to stay in,” said Eric Freeman of Canonsburg, who had just left the Manadalay Bay Hotel and Casino, where the gunman fired down from the 32nd floor into a crowd at a concert, just 15 minutes before the shooting started.

“This couple that was running past us said they're shooting down at Mandalay Bay, and we had just left there,” he said. “And it was like, what do you mean? And she tells us the story of how she ran, that she left her shoes behind and had to stop at a store and buy flip-flops because they just left everything and ran.”
