How will Pittsburgh pay for cleanup from dozens of landslides across the city?

Over the last several weeks there have been more than a dozen landslides in Pittsburgh alone, forcing residents to evacuate their homes often with little more than what's on their backs.

It's why Mayor Bill Peduto gathered several members of his administration yesterday to discuss the issue and how it can be solved.

Peduto said they're working with residents on a case-by-case basis to try to minimize the impact -- a difficult position, since insurance doesn't cover landslides.

The city is already over its landslide budget for the year and a wet spring could create more problems and require more help.

"I know that Pittsburghers would say do what you can with my tax dollars to help minimize. We're trying to do that as best we can. Unfortunately, it appears we're not going to be able to get any federal help, so we're looking for state help,” Peduto said.

Peduto said the city will have to take a close look at where homes are being built, particularly in areas prone to landslides, like Mount Washington.

It's a problem that could impact more people over the next few months.
