Lingering showers, isolated storm heading into overnight hours

UPDATE: 8 PM

An approaching cold front will trigger several areas of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon.

As the sun sets, the showers and thunderstorms will continue to weaken.

This front will stall across the southern part of the area Friday, allowing for a drier day Friday.

More rounds of showers and thunderstorms will set up this weekend and into the early part of next week.  It will continue to be very warm and humid into the weekend with afternoon heat index values in the lower 90s.

An approaching cold front will help to trigger several lines of showers and storms late Thursday afternoon and this evening.

The strongest storms will produce wind gusts in excess of 40 mph and rain heavy enough to cause ponding on area roads.

The best timing for storms to roll through the area is through 9 p.m.

This front will stall across the southern part of the area Friday, allowing for a drier day.

UPDATE 8:50 AM

Meteorologist Kevin Benson has now rolled back the anticipation of storms in the WPXI viewing area to late Thursday evening into overnight.

It will be hot and humid throughout the day Thursday, and only minor spots of rain could come across Pittsburgh in the afternoon.

Friday should be mostly dry after the overnight showers, with partly sunny skies and a high of 86 degrees.
