Man acquitted in Wilkinsburg mass shooting facing new charge

WILKINSBURG, Pa. — Cheron Shelton, the man who was acquitted in the Wilkinsburg mass shooting case, is now facing a new charge.

According to court documents filed Tuesday, Shelton, 33, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh for violating federal firearms laws.

The indictment said Shelton “possessed a firearm and ammunition” on March 12, 2016 knowing that he had been previously convicted of a felony – which meant he was not allowed to own a firearm.

That date was just three days after five people and an unborn baby were gunned down at a backyard barbecue in Wilkinsburg. Chelton was found not guilty in that case earlier this month.

If convicted of this new gun charge, Shelton faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
