Man pistol-whipped during home invasion in Sheraden

PITTSBURGH — Medics were called early Tuesday to the scene of a home invasion in Pittsburgh's Sheraden neighborhood.

Police arrived at the home on Sacramento Street shortly before 5 a.m.

Neighbors said they saw two men get out of a car with a battering ram, which they used to break through the front door of the home.

"There was a ski mask here and a hoodie and another ski mask up in the yard,” said Jessie Rodgers.

Rodgers and her four kids were kept in their home as police searched the woods for the suspects.

“My husband had to get escorted to the car to go to work because they had the guy over there and they were still looking for the other guy,” she said.

Investigators said the intruders had guns, fired at least one shot and pistol-whipped a 29-year-old man in the home. A 26-year-old woman and 10-year-old girl were also home but were not injured.

Police arrested one of the suspects, Rande Carter, 22, of West Oakland. The second intruder ran off.

The motive remained unclear.

Neighbors complained Tuesday about an uptick in violence and drugs in that section of Sheraden. They’re weary of the violence, especially Rodgers, whose children witnessed today’s chaos.

"They were pretty scared, tried to calm them down, and make sure to tell them nothing was going to happen and that the police were here to protect them,” she said.

Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith said she’s working with police on addressing the issues.
