PITTSBURGH — A man who was armed with a shotgun was shot by a Pittsburgh police officer early Saturday morning in the city’s East Liberty neighborhood, police said.
Officers were called about 1:30 a.m. for a report that a man was seen in the area of the 700 block of Mellon Street wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and carrying a shotgun.
Police said officers spotted a man matching the description walking in the 600 block of North Highland Avenue.

The man, who is believed to be in his 20s, was shot in his left side by an officer, police said. He was alert and conscious when he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Police recovered the shotgun at the scene.
