Pennsylvania's attorney general demands answers in Uber hack

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Channel 11 has learned that 13,000 Pennsylvanians were affected by the Uber hack.

The state attorney general is now demanding Uber share details about the stolen information.

Last week, it was revealed that hackers stole personal data from 57 million people in Uber's system.

It happened last year, and Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the data and keep the breach under wraps.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said these kinds of breaches will keep happening until these companies are forced to change the way they do business.

He directed the Bureau of Consumer Protection to send a letter to Uber demanding the timeline and exact date the hack was discovered, the number of affected drivers and passengers in Pennsylvania and nationwide, and the specific information and data that was stolen.

That will determine if laws were broken because of the delay in notifying victims.

Uber said it is monitoring hacked accounts for fraudulent activity and is offering free credit monitoring.
