Police charge woman with attempting to run daughter over with car

Butler police arrested a woman they say tried to run over her own daughter with a car before nearly hitting a police officer as she fled the scene.

Only Channel 11 spoke to police about the Sunday night fight that led up to Shelly Godfrey gunning her car at a group of people outside a home.

“She came back around at a high rate of speed and aimed the vehicle right at them,” said deputy Chief Dave Adam.

Sarah Ross said she saw everything.

“Her mom floored it. I mean, there was a tire mark,” she said.

A group of people were inside West Brady Street home when police say Godfrey began fighting with a man. Police say Godfrey hit him and bit him.

Godfrey was told to leave. Officers say Godfrey got in her car and circled the block, saw the group now outside on the sidewalk and gunned the engine.

"She was going to kill her daughter," Ross said. "I was like, 'Rachel, move!' And Rachel jumped back just in time, by a hair."

Ross said Godfrey damaged her SUV as she fled, ripping off the side mirror and more before she drove off.

Police say she took off down the street at a fast rate of speed, nearly clipping a police cruiser before he pulled her over and arrested her.

“It was ‘run.’ It was ‘run.’ It was ‘terrified.’ … If I could have got to her in time, I would’ve,” Ross said. “I just screamed, ‘Rachel, run!’
