Police release images of person of interest after 18-year-old woman shot getting off bus

PITTSBURGH — An 18-year-old woman was shot Tuesday morning on a sidewalk in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood, police said.

The Braddock woman was shot around 10:35 a.m. in the 500 block of North Homewood Avenue.

Officials said the victim is believed to have been walking toward Susquehanna Street with an unidentified man at the time of the shooting.

“We believe there was at least one shot fired. We believe it may have struck her in a manner that made two wounds: one in an arm and one in her back,” Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

Investigators said the woman was conscious and breathing when she was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where she was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to her back.

The shooting happened near the Community Empowerment Association, which is hosting a summer camp for about 100 children. No children were outside when the shooting happened.

"We have youth that have had incidents happen right in front of their homes, and this is where they feel safest at. So we always try to keep our doors open," said Martell Covington, of Community Empowerment Association Inc.

Homewood resident Trina Anderson said she is challenging the mayor and elected officials to step up and help curb crime in the neighborhood.

"I am so tired of these babies -- because that's what they are, they're babies -- taking each other's lives. It makes no sense," Anderson said. "Something has to change. Somebody has to do something, you know. The organizations around here, they can't do it on their own."

Police are still looking for the shooter. Police are also looking for the man who was walking with the victim at the time of the shooting. It was not clear if that man is a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
