PWSA lifts boil-water advisory for all areas except Millvale

PITTSBURGH — The boil-water advisory in Pittsburgh is over, but it drags on in Millvale.

People living in that community have already had enough.

“It's kind of a bummer,” said Bryan Tramontina. “Obviously it's not great to have to boil your water.”

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority lifted the boil-water advisory issued Monday after a tear in the cover was discovered at the Lanpher Water reservoir.

Millvale, Reserve Township and 19 other communities, mainly on Pittsburgh's North Side, dealt with having to get water from water buffaloes or buying it bottled.

But while it was lifted for all but Millvale, the Department of Environmental Protection told the PWSA, this comes with conditions.

A spokesperson tells us PWSA has to continue taking chlorine residual readings and bacteria samples daily at the sites until further notice.

They also have to monitor chlorine residuals from the Aspinwall Treatment Plant until further notice.

As for why the Millvale portion of the system is still shut down, the DEP says PWSA has to submit sufficient data in writing to the DEP about the water quality.

For many neighbors, this is the second time this year they've had to boil water.

In January, there was an issue with possible contamination.

“I think it needs to be under better management,” Tramontina said. “You can't have a glass of water when you want it.”

The advisory is expected to be lifted for Millvale in the next 24 to 48 hours.
