Residents pack public forum to show support for grocery store

BLOOMFIELD, Pa. — Bloomfield residents packed a public forum Monday night, concerned over their grocery store potentially disappearing in favor of a new mixed-use development

Developers from Milhaus Development were on hand to answer questions about the future of the Shursave IGA along Liberty Avenue.

The developers are looking to demolish existing buildings on the property for 237 apartment units. But residents say it is the only accessible store for people without cars, and the only grocery open past 6 p.m.

"They are stranding these people," one resident told Channel 11.

The building includes a swimming pool and parking. Part of the plan would include putting in a new grocery store in the space with apartments above; however, they say they don’t have an official commitment from a grocery store yet.

"This is one of the final areas that's affordable for everyone that lives here," said Alexis McMaster.

Milhaus said it isn't looking to hurt anyone in the community.

"We don't want to push anyone out," said Thomas Bost, Milhaus vice president of development. "We want to expand on what already is. And we think all the improvements will actually improve what's there."

But people think any new grocery store -- and new apartments -- could drive up prices for low-income residents.

"They don't seem to understand what is already in bloomfield and they don't seem interested in at least making any of us comfortable with the development they have planned," McMaster said.

The meeting was informational, and no vote was taken.
