School police officer taken to hospital after assault by student

PITTSBURGH — A school police officer at University Prep in Pittsburgh was taken to a hospital after an assault by a student.

The assault allegedly happened after the officer tried to stop a student who was chasing another student, according to a Pittsburgh Public Schools spokesperson. The officer was inadvertently elbowed in the face.

The officer is recovering after being hit in the head and the eye.

According to the schools spokesperson, the officer was taken to an urgent care facility, then later transported to a hospital by a family member.

This is the latest in a series of incidents where police were called to the school.

Earlier this week, a fight broke out among four students and a security guard was injured while breaking up that altercation.

About a month ago, staff members discovered several students slurring their speech and staggering after allegedly sharing a Xanax bar, a controlled substance used by adults to treat anxiety and pain.
