The mother and son had been staying at a detention facility in suburban Philadelphia since 2015 and were put a plane Wednesday back to their native Honduras. Immigration attorneys said they were seeking special status for the 5-year-old so he could stay here legally.

Casey tweeted a picture of a letter he sent to President Donald Trump, including an image of the little boy and the text that as a country, “We are better than this.”

“If the administration is really worried about law enforcement, and protecting us from violent criminals and people who come to the country to do us harm, they should work on that. This kind of action makes us less safe,” Casey said.

Just more than 17,000 people were deported in February, which was the president’s first full month in office.

This time last year, President Barack Obama deported had a few hundred more people than President Trump.
