Sinkhole among damage left behind by heavy rain, storms

Steady rainfall that started Sunday night and continued through Monday morning created ponding and flooding on area roadways and caused varying degrees of damage throughout the region.

ALLEGHENY COUNTY

In Monroeville, a sinkhole formed in the parking lot of an apartment building on Lynn Avenue.

The hole opened up Sunday night as a creek next to the building rose and flooded the parking lot.

Richard Cline owns the apartment building. He is glad no one was hurt, but is left trying to figure out how to get the sinkhole fixed.

“They usually park in this area, so it's a blessing that nothing really bad happened,” Cline said. “I don't have the money to fix this, so I'm really hoping I can find a way and hopefully it gets taken care of.”

“The road is ours, but the stream is not. The stream is owned by the property owner. The stream flows through and falls under the jurisdiction of the DEP,” an Allegheny County spokesperson said. “It's our understanding that a large diameter pipe was installed to carry the creek under private property and was installed by the property owner.”

Outside Monroeville, flooded streets were reported in various parts of Allegheny County, including in Baldwin on Streets Run Road, which was closed to traffic until water receded.

Several downed trees were also reported.

BUTLER COUNTY

Several parts of Butler County experienced areas of flooding as a result of the rain, forcing road closures.

Park Road in Middlesex Township and Spring Street in Harmony were both shut down because of high water. Flooding was also reported on Dinnerbell Road in Saxonburg.

LAWRENCE COUNTY

In Lawrence County, a tree fell along Brownhome Road in Scott Township during the rainfall. Meanwhile, wires were brought down on Route 19 in Washington Township.
