Stolen state police vehicle involved in crash in Fayette County

WHARTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A stolen Pennsylvania State Police car was involved in a chase and crash Thursday afternoon in Fayette County.

Troopers were initially dispatched to Biererwood Acres for a service call. While there, a man gained access to their vehicle and drove off.

The man led police on a chase through several rural communities.

The chase ended on Chalk Hill Ohiopyle Road when another state police trooper executed a PIT maneuver and caused the stolen vehicle to roll over, police said.

"I just thought our lives were over basically,” she said. “I thought this was it."

Moments before the crash, Kristi Trimbath and her 6-year-old son Trey were nearly hit head-on. Trimbath said she swerved into the right lane, which was empty.

“By the grace of God there was no one in the right lane so we were able to get over into the right lane or we would have hit him head-on,” she said.

Investigators have not identified the driver. He’s now in custody.

Three troopers and a civilian were treated for minor injuries, police said.
