Street blocked off after bricks fall from building in Swissvale

SWISSVALE, Pa. — A road in Swissvale has been closed after bricks fell from a building Tuesday morning.

Investigators said some bricks from a wall fell around 8:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of Washington Avenue.

Bricks were scattered all over the sidewalk, and a big hole was left in the vacant building.  The road is blocked off with tape and barriers.

Emergency crews said no one was hurt.

Channel 11 spoke with the building's owner who said when he bought the building next door, the building that collapsed came with it.

He said he was going to turn the building into apartments, but now he will tear it down.

Resident Max Davis said the road doesn’t get many pedestrians, but it was a cut through for traffic.

“This is the only industrial strip in the area.  There is some residential but access is limited right now.  I know we have trucks getting in and out at the moment,” Davis said.

The fire chief isn’t sure when the road will reopen.

Channel 11’s Gabriella DeLuca is talking with the fire chief, who says he’s concerned about tonight’s weather and how it could affect the building.  She will have that story coming up on Channel 11 News beginning at 5 p.m.
