Tips on how to lower your electric bill during the winter

A number of customers contacted Channel 11 saying they have seen a spike in their electric bills over recent months.

A spokesperson for West Penn Power told Channel 11 the hike is due to the bitterly cold temperatures and said customers have options when it comes to paying and lowering their electric bills.

HOW CAN YOU LOWER YOUR BILL?

A West Penn Power spokesperson said consumers should try to reduce energy consumption for the remainder of the winter. They offered consumers the following tips:

• Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your setting by just one degree can lower heating bills.

• Close the fireplace damper when it is not in use to keep cold air out.

• Close the drapes at night. During the day, only open those that receive direct sunlight.

• Turn off lights when you aren’t using them, and use a timer for outdoor lighting.
