Washington jail guard charged with stealing inmate money

A Washington County jail guard is facing felony charges that he stole more than $2,000 worth of money meant for the inmate account.

Police say Michael Robert Hilderbrand, 49, was a captain at the Washington County Correctional Facility, which made him responsible for making deposits to the inmate account during his shifts.

A forensic audit found $2,161 was missing from that account between Jan. 1, 2016, and May 31, and an investigation discovered the missing deposits occurred during Hilderbrand’s shifts, according to the criminal complaint.

An employee who noticed the missing money and its ties to Hilderbrand said she spoke to him in person and via email about the deposits, and he promised several times to return the money and “make it right,” according to the complaint.

Hilderbrand was arraigned Thursday on charges of theft and receiving stolen property. He faces a preliminary hearing on Oct. 11.
