We're No.1 ... Again: Forbes Names Pittsburgh 'Most Livable City'

PITTSBURGH,None — Forbes Magazine has once again named Pittsburgh its "Most Livable City" in its annual report that looks at cost of living, unemployment rate, income growth and crime rates, among other factors.

"Indeed, Pittsburgh's art scene, job prospects, safety and affordability make it the most livable city in the country, according to measures studied. The city has rebounded from its manufacturing past. Disused steel mills have been re purposed into multimedia art centers, and amid a struggling national economy, Google Pittsburgh, a test site for the company's new high-speed broadband network, has expanded its offices to accommodate more hires," reads an article posted on Forbes.com.

Forbes also said Pittsburgh's strong university presence helps bolster its livability.

Pittsburgh ranked No. 10 on Forbes' 2009 Most Livable list.

In June 2009, Pittsburgh was ranked the No. 1 city in the United States by The Economist magazine.

The place to be in Pittsburgh appears to be downtown.

New condominiums and apartments are filling up and renovation of Market Square is well under way, prompting people to take notice.

"When I moved here, there was nothing much here," said Dwayne Wells, a downtown resident. "Now, things are starting to spring up around me. I feel like it's growing right before my eyes."

Wells was the very first tenant at Market Square Place apartments. And now there's a waiting list for this property, which has 46 units, a parking garage and YMCA.

"We have a swimming pool in downtown Pittsburgh that wasn't here six months ago and seven more units across the way at Fifth and Market," said Michael Edwards, president of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. "We even have a shoe store downtown."

But not everyone's convinced that downtown Pittsburgh is the place to move to.

"I think there are not enough stores," said Tramainne Boxley. "The parking is horrible."

Edwards said he hopes to convince skeptics.

"We convince them by giving them a great experience. That's all we can do," said Edwards.
