Woman says teacher twisted son's arm in retaliation for asking to use bathroom

A woman said her son was injured when a gym teacher twisted his because he asked to use the bathroom during class.

The woman took her 6-year-old son to Children’s Hospital, where she said doctors confirmed the boy’s injury. She took her concerns to police.

“I do believe it was child abuse,” Auiwon Hicks said.

Hicks did not send her son to school on Thursday and said she might not send him back to Wilkins Primary after the Oct. 13 incdent.

The school is not identifying the teacher, and the teacher has not been charged.

Wilkins Township police and the Woodland Hills School District are investigating Hicks’ allegations that her son was hurt during gym class. Hicks said her son tapped his teacher on the arm to ask to go to the bathroom, and the teacher twisted the boy’s arm.

“Initially he couldn't extend his arm where he was hurt, but he's doing a little better,” Hicks said.

School officials confirmed that the incident was recorded on video, which has been turned over to police.

The Woodland Hills superintendent said the teacher has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation.

“I just want to see more,” the superintendent said. “I just want to learn more. I don’t know enough about the situation to render any kind of a judgment.”
