Penguins honor Rooney before playoff game

PITTSBURGH — The Penguins honored former Steelers’ owner Dan Rooney at Friday’s playoff game.

Rooney died Thursday at age 84.

“Rooney is a true patriot,” said Jacob Bartolomucci. “He's a great guy. He's been with the Steelers forever and he really treats his players right."

The Penguins’ players wore special decals on their helmets that had the Steelers logo on them and read, “Dan Rooney, 1933 to 2007.”

There was a moment of silence for Rooney before the game, and a tribute video shown on the Jumbotron that ended with, “Thank you for the memories, Mr. Rooney. You were the champion in the city of champions.”

"I thought it was a good tribute. It showed how good of a man he was, respectful and everybody loved him. Everybody loves Dan Rooney," said Alex Porco.

David Morehouse, the Penguins’ president and CEO, said Rooney “personified everything that’s good about Pittsburgh.

Penguins’ owner Mario Lemieux called him, “an amazing man who made such tremendous contributions to the NFL, the City of Pittsburgh and the people of our community. I feel very fortunate to have known him. He impacted many of our lives, and he left a legacy that makes us all proud to be Pittsburghers.”
