Ones to Watch: Scott Young

BEIJING, China — He’s played in the Olympics, coached in the Olympics, and won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Coach Scott Young is one to watch in the upcoming Beijing Games.

Young won the cup with the Penguins in 1991.

He’s now the Penguins director of player development.

He’ll be coaching Team USA alongside his friend David Quinn.

Young played in the 1988 Olympics and coached four years ago in Pyeongchang. He says putting on the red, which and blue just hits differently.

“The first time that you’re competing against countries, that you’re wearing the USA jersey, and you’re hearing the national anthem, because after a lot of the tournaments still play the anthem for the winning team,” he said. “You just don’t listen to the anthem the same anymore.”

In the last day or two, Young and the U.S. men’s hockey team flew to Los Angeles where they’ll have a couple of practices before heading to Beijing.
