Pittsburgh Superstars: Herb Brooks

PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Herb Brooks coached the 1980 United States Miracle team of amateurs who took down the heavily favored Russians and then went on to win Olympic gold.

Kurt Russell played him in the Disney movie “Miracle.”

“People forget that Herb Brooks then came to the Pens later as a scout, and when he passed away, he was the Director of Player Personnel,” said Anne Madarasz, director of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. “He had a real role forming those first Stanley Cup teams.”

Brooks also led Team USA to a silver medal in 2002.

He died in a car crash in Minnesota one year later.
