Guide to Carnegie Science Center

The

is one of four Carnegie museums in the Pittsburgh area. The museum, which opened in 1991, features four floors of hands-on and interactive exhibits — with a mixture of both permanent and traveling exhibits there is always something new to see and do each time you visit.

Carnegie Science Center exhibits

Popular

include BodyWorks, which gives visitors the chance to learn all about the body from the inside out with exhibits that range from showing what bones look like on an X-ray to what a baby looks like in the womb.

The Ropes Challenge is another popular exhibit where guests can test their skills on 11 different elements that include balancing on rolling logs, climbing a horizontal net and zip lining.

For a special treat, guests can even hop aboard a real submarine on the USS Requin and learn about its riveting past that includes scientific missions that are still classified today.

Be sure to save time for an exciting show at the Buhl Planetarium, where you can see what it's like to be an astronaut or learn all about the cosmos, gravity and how to locate constellations.

Or get up close and personal with all sorts of species at the museum's Rangos Giant Cinema, where there's a variety of 3D movie adventures to choose from.

Hours of operation

The Carnegie Science Center is open Monday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except when the Steelers have home games or there is another major event at Heinz Field.)

Tickets for the laser show, USS Requin submarine and Observatory SkyWatch are sold separately.

Monday through Friday, groups of 15 people (ages 3 and older) or more may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $8. Group prices for Saturday and Sunday are $10.

Tickets can be purchased at the science center's lobby. Online ticketing is currently unavailable.

From the North:

Follow I-79 South to I-279 South

Take I-279 S to Exit 1B (North Shore)

Use left lane to follow Reedsdale St.

Make a left on Allegheny Avenue

From the South:

Follow I-79 North to I-376 East

Follow the signs to the North Shore

Go through the tunnel Fort Pitt Tunnel and over the Fort Pitt Bridge

Stay in the left lane to merge onto the Fort Duquesne Bridge

Take Exit 1B (North Shore)

Turn left onto Allegheny Avenue
