PITTSBURGH — Since the beginning of fall, the weather may have seemed a bit wild and rightfully so. The Pittsburgh area has seen high temperatures jump to as much as 82 degrees and fallen to as low as 45.
October is on track to be one of the warmest on record. However, all of that will soon come to an end as we close out the month on an unseasonably cold and potentially snowy note.
After a one-day warm-up with plenty of sun, big changes will move in for the weekend. A cold front is expected to cross western Pennsylvania Saturday, bringing rain and much cooler weather.
Showers will move into the area mid to late Saturday morning. As the afternoon progresses, the showers will become more numerous. Periods of rain, some heavy, are expected by late afternoon and into the evening.

This same cold front causing the soaking rain will also bring a change in temperatures. Friday night’s low will be around 50 degrees and it won’t rebound very much once we get into the weekend.
This time of year, the high for the day is generally around 4 p.m. However, Saturday’s high of 55 will hit around 1 p.m. and will drop quickly through the day thanks to the passage of the front.
Rain will taper off through the late evening with just a few showers left over for Saturday night. Even though the heaviest precipitation will have come to an end, isolated showers and a few wet snowflakes can still be expected for early Sunday as temperatures will drop into the 30s.
Some of the higher elevations have already seen some of their first snowflakes of the season. Anyone in the Laurel Highlands who have yet to see snow have a good shot at it this weekend.
Western Pennsylvania is no stranger to snow early in the fall season. Only three times in the last 18 years has Pittsburgh not even had a trace of snow. Furthermore, those three snowless Octobers also led to barely any snow in November as well.
