16-year-old suspect in July 4 shooting in downtown Pittsburgh turns himself in

PITTSBURGH — A suspect in a downtown Pittsburgh shooting on July 4 that left four people wounded turned himself in Monday afternoon, police said.

Kishawn Jackson, 16, of Garfield, was identified by police Monday morning as a suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he turned himself in about 3 p.m.

Police said Jackson will be charged as an adult with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, causing a catastrophe, firearms not to be carried without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor, recklessly endangering another person and discharging a firearm within the city.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 11 News, surveillance video and witness statements helped police identify Jackson as a suspect.

Police said Jackson “exhibited loyalty to a certain violent group in the city's East End” and associated with a 14-year-old boy who was murdered in May 2015 in the East Hills.

Shots rang out moments after the city’s fireworks display ended on July 4. The victims were found in the vicinity of Seventh Street and Liberty Avenue.

The injuries to the victims, who are 21, 15, 18 and 16 years old, were not life-threatening. Thousands of people who had packed the area began to run when they heard the gunfire.

Earlier this month, police released surveillance photos of a “person of interest” whom they were seeking in the shooting.

Investigators said the person was seen at the bus stop at Penn and North Aiken in Garfield before the shooting. He was then at Penn and Ninth Street after the shooting.
