Car lands in swimming pool after crashing off road

NORTH UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. — It's not the first time David Smith has found a car in his pool.

His North Union Township home sits beside Rolling Hills Estate Road, and cars have hydroplaned or slid on rocks and into his pool five times since 2004. This is the sixth incident.

“Insurance company will pay for it but that's not the problem,” he said. “It's my grandkids can't even play in the pool. If they were in there, someone would be dead right now. That's the problem."

A loud sound woke Smith up Thursday morning.

“I thought it was thunder and lightning just because of the sound of it,” he said. “Then I looked out and, well, it wasn't.”

The driver was shaken up but not hurt. He told Smith he hydroplaned, lost control, drove through the deck and landed right in the pool.

"Looked like a ground mole coming out of its hole, but it was a guy coming out of his car," Smith said.

He's contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation about the problem.

"(The driver) was nice about it," Smith said. "It's not his fault. PennDOT needs to fix the problem with the water, the rocks and the speed."
