Family loses everything after flooding in McCandless

MCCANDLESS, Pa. — Friday’s storms caused severe flood damage to a home McCandless and neighbors stepped up to help Sunday before more storms rolled in.

Flash flooding devastated the area, causing one family to lose practically everything.

“It was flowing from this garage into there and within three minutes it blew the door open and it got up to the landing,” said Nick Kalich, a victim of the flooding.

He was home with his wife, Allison Kalich, when they got a flash flood warning Friday. At the time, they didn’t think much about it and went about their afternoon.

Then they heard a loud gushing sound.

“Looking out and we’re surrounded. That feeling of just being scared,” Allison Kalich said.

The Kalichs lost everything. Their cars, furniture and air conditioner.

There was also extensive damage to their basement and lower level of their home.

Through Access McCandless, dozens of volunteers came out Sunday to help the family clean up.

One neighbor even donated a washer and dryer.

“In a matter of 20 minutes my life changed. But I am so grateful to the community,” Allison Kalich said.
