At least 6 people escape from North Hills apartment home after car fire spreads

PITTSBURGH — Flames were shooting from the roof of an apartment home in Pittsburgh’s North Hills Monday afternoon. The house along Peachtree Way just to the north of Downtown Pittsburgh is not livable, and a minivan parked outside is the reason why.

Electrician Bryan Bigley said before he knew it, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. It was having mechanical problems on McKnight Road and he said he was just able to make outside the home before the battery died.

“I told the people in the house I’m going to leave it here and fix it in the morning and I seen smoke,” Bigley said.

That’s when it sparked, the flames quickly jumping from the van to the home.

Two adults and five kids living in the lower level of the duplex all got out safely.

Bigley said he lost thousands of dollars in tools inside his van.
