BOCA RATON, Fla. — A Florida newborn is in state custody after maintenance workers found the baby girl crying in or near a dumpster at a Boca Raton apartment complex, authorities said.
According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, two workers were walking in the Alister Boca Raton neighborhood Wednesday morning when they made the chilling discovery in the trash area.

Several bystanders gathered as the men called for help. One witness told WPEC that the baby was covered with dirt.
Emergency responders took the child to the hospital. She is expected to live, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

Now, investigators are trying to track down the girl's mother. Deputies will be canvassing the complex "for a couple of days," a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
The state Department of Children and Families is caring for the baby, the Sun Sentinel reported.
