District to Offer Fall Sports Physicals

July 12, 2017 — Mars Area School District will offer physicals for students in Grades 7-12 registered to participate in 2017-2018 Fall Sports, beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Mars Area High School.

Cost is $20 per student. Checks may be made payable to “Mars Area School District.” All student-athletes interested in participating in sports must undergo one comprehensive physical evaluation per year.

Parents must register students participating in sports at Mars Area High School and Mars Area Middle School online at www.FamilyID.com/mars-area-school-district-athletics. Parents must also print and submit the designated PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) Physical Forms available at FamilyID.com.

Note: Mars Area School District charges a $100 Athletic Participation Fee per student per sport. Checks should be turned in with physical forms to the Nurse’s Office in the student’s individual building. No athlete will be permitted to practice, without a completed physical and paid fee.

Online Registration Open for Annual Golf Outing

June 12, 2017 — Mars Planet Foundation will hold its fifth annual Golf Outing at noon on Friday, Aug. 11, at Rittswood Golf Course.

Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 11 a.m. and with a four-person scramble start at noon. Refreshments will be provided.

District Launches New Website

July 12, 2017 — Mars Area School District has launched a new website through the web provider, edlio. The District invites parents, students and community members to explore our new site at

The website will continue to serve as a primary source of District and school news and information, including upcoming events dates, student achievement, contact information and more. The new site also includes several new features as well as “Student Information System” link to access the Skyward Family Access Portal, which will house student information such as attendance, grades, student schedules, demographics and more.

High School to Issue Parking Permits

July 13, 2017 — Mars Area High School will issue Parking Permits for the 2017-2018 School Year from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on the following dates:

Wednesday, July 19 — Vo-Tech Students & Seniors

Thursday, July 20 — Juniors involved in extracurricular activities or who work immediately after school during the first semester

Students must present a completed Student Parking Application (available online at www.marsk12.org or from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, in the school’s main office); Emergency Authorization Form, a valid driver’s license; vehicle registration; insurance card; and the non-refundable $175 fee for a year-long permit or $87.50 for a semester permit. Parking permits will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All students are reminded that driving to school is a privilege, not a right. Students may lose this privilege for improper conduct or a violation of the school’s student parking regulations and/or District Policy 223 Use of Motor Vehicles.

District to Introduce New Student Information System

July 12, 2017 —Mars Area School District is excited to introduce Skyward Family Access, a new web-based tool that will enable parents/guardians to view school-related information for students via a secure Internet connection.

Within the next few weeks, parents will receive specific directions for logging in to Skyward Family Access and for viewing student information such as attendance, grades, student schedules, demographics and more. (Note: Access to students’ grades and reports via Edline is no longer available.)

In addition, the District’s is also moving to a new website, which is also expected to be available within the next few weeks. The web address will remain www.marsk12.org and the site will include a “Student Information System” link to access the Skyward Family Access portal.

Some information may not be immediately available in Skyward for all students as the District is continuing to work to implement this new system. For more information, call (724) 625-1518.

Mars Athletic Complex Reopens to Public

July 12, 2017 — Mars Athletic Complex has reopened to the public at the conclusion of a turf replacement project.

The track and field at the stadium is available for public use daily in accordance with the guidelines set forth in District Policy 707 Community Use of School Facilities.

High School Sets Summer Keystone Testing Window

June 13, 2017 — Mars Area High School’s summer Keystone Exam Testing Window for all students entering Grades 9-11 will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, July 31-Aug. 2:

Monday, July 31 — Algebra I

Tuesday, Aug. 1 — English Literature

Wednesday, Aug. 2 — Biology

Students who previously scored “Basic” or “Below Basic” on any Keystone Exam must retake the exam during the Summer Testing Window. Mars Area High School will notify those students who need to retake a Keystone Exam directly, once exam results from the May Testing Window are reported in July.

Once results are received, all students must confirm that they will be present for re-testing by contacting Stacey Hirth, guidance secretary, at (724) 625-1581 or shirth@marsk12.org by no later than Thursday, July 20.

In addition, students preparing to re-take a Keystone Exam during the Summer Testing Window are asked to complete corresponding “Supplemental Instructional Resources,” which are available via the “Mars Area High School” page at www.marsk12.org. Those students who access the materials must sign and bring the completed “Supplemental Instruction” form with them to their Keystone Exam testing session.

School Board Meetings Set for August

July 13, 2017 — Mars Area School Board will meet on the following dates in August:

Tuesday, Aug. 1 — Work Session, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 8 — Regular Meeting, 7 p.m.

Board meetings are held in the boardroom at Mars Area School District’s Administration Office, 545 Route 228, Mars, Pa. 16046. All meetings are open to the public.

July 13, 2017 — Mars Area School District will offer an opportunity for students in Grades K-8 and their parents to check out their school buildings as part of special Visitation Day events, as follows:

Tuesday, Aug. 8 — Mars Area Middle School, 9 a.m. to noon and

7 to 8 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 18 — Mars Area Centennial School, Mars Area Elementary School & Mars Area Primary Center, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
