People are missing their hairstylists now more than ever, as salons remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And while people struggle with roots, grays and missing their cuts, this is something that is just as hard for the stylists as it is for their clients.
“I’m feeling bad that we’re not with our clients because it’s such a personal business,” Cheri Parise, one of the owners of Profiles Styling Salon said. “We miss our clients as much as I know they’re missing us.”
Profiles has turned to social media and email to not only keep updated with their clients, but provide helpful tips and tricks for that hard-to-manage quarantine hair.
“We are using social media to keep positive vibes going,” Parise said. “We want to make sure they see our faces. You know, we’ve asked our staff just show us what you’re doing, and show what’s going on for you during the pandemic because we want to be in front of the clients and give a little bit of tips but positive encouragement, too.”
While they stand by and support their clients during this time, Thursday is the day to show your salons a little extra love.
April 30 is National Hairstylist Appreciation Day, and there are plenty of ways to show your stylists some positivity during this time!
Many salons, like Profiles Styling Salon in Cranberry, are not able to provide services right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show your appreciation — but how do you support the salons and stylists you are missing?
-Drop a nice web review
-Purchase gift cards
-Give a follow to salon and personal stylists social media account
All of these things are things that Parise says Profiles has seen an influx of during this time, and it means the world to them.
“It is just nice to see that they (our clients) have our backs at this time and we’re going to see them again. Even some little messages, or you know, talk to us. We’ve had a couple people just message me, message us and say we can’t wait to see you so that’s been very good to feel that support that we’ve had through the community for so long," said Parise.
Q-Tine Hair Tips and Tricks
As we support our salons, they are hard at work to support clients. Here are tips and tricks pulled from Profiles staff and Cheri Parise.
Hide (or embrace) the roots
At this point, roots are in! The hashtag #EmbraceYourRoots that has circulated through the hair industry to show we are all in this together, but there are still plenty of ways to cover or hide the roots.
Volume is a good friend of ours to hide roots. In addition to root sprays that can cover up and tone things down, you can use an eye shadow pallet to match different tones!
Skip a wash
If you want to stretch out shampoo a day or two, it can help train your hair to produce less oil. Adding a little dry shampoo into the mix can mask any excess oils.
This is also a great time to deep condition your hair.
Sport fun accessories
Hats and headbands are a great way to cover up while looking fashionable!
Work that up-do
Ponytails and braids are an easy alternative to not only get your hair out of your face, but give your hair a break from heat products.
For ponytails and other up-dos, make sure you change it up. Wearing a ponytail in the same place too frequently can cause breakage, so mix-and-match a high and low pony or bun.
Platinum blonde WARNING
Blonde has a lot of science that goes into finding the perfect color.
Parise says, “I would really hesitate on trying to pick a color to do your Platinum dark routes from a ballet or anything like that, it’s very complicated for us even to make sure you get the right tones and more lifting hair that is gonna cause a little bit of breakage or tones in your hair that you don’t want.”
