PITTSBURGH — One of two suspects in the shooting death of a 17-year-old girl this past summer waived his preliminary hearing Friday.
Steven Canseler is being charged as an adult in the shooting death of Daija McCall, who was killed in Homewood.
"He just turned 17 years old. He's obviously upset and his mindset isn't really good right now. But that's to be expected," Owen Seman, Canseler’s attorney, said.
Investigators told Channel 11 that McCall was trying to sell a half kilo of cocaine when she was killed. They believe Canseler was the middle man in the deal that was set up.
Seman told Channel 11’s Aaron Martin that other suspects in the case could play a role as the case heads to trial.
"The other two are really going to be the main focus. They are going to be the main focus and Steven is kind of ancillary. He got wrapped up into this thing. But he's in it and we have to deal with it," Seman said.
Police said 19-year-old Douglas Lockett Jr. is also charged with killing McCall. He was arrested in Detroit, Michigan last week.
Police have not confirmed if they are searching for a third person involved in the case.
"It's just hard to imagine these things happening, it really is. The death of a 17-year-old and the incarceration of a 17-year-old is never something that's easy to take," Seman said.
Seman said he will review text messages allegedly sent that could implicate Canseler in McCall’s death.
Canseler is being held at the Allegheny County Jail without bail. He will be arraigned on the charges next in December.
