12-year-old Boy Scout dies in sand dune

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A 12-year-old Boy Scout has died after being buried by sand in southwestern Michigan.

It happened Saturday at a Van Buren County park near Lake Michigan.

Police say the sand collapsed when the boy was digging into the side of a sand dune and crawled into a small space.

Scouts on scene say they went looking for the boy when they noticed he was missing for up 30 minutes.

Rescuers were able to get a pulse and rush him to a hospital, but he later died.

On Sunday, the Michigan Crossroads Council of the Boy Scouts of America issued a statement, saying: "Safety is integral to everything we do, and the BSA  places great importance on prevention and preparedness to create the most secure environment possible for youth members."

The South Haven Police Department says it's still investigating the incident.
