HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — Two 19-year-old girls were killed after crashing their car late Monday night in Harrison Township. Police identified the victims as Elizabeth Carney and Samantha Smith.
Police said the victims crashed into a vehicle salvage yard along Freeport Road at about 11:30 p.m., but the crash wasn't discovered until 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The accident wasn't reported until the morning because no one witnessed the crash, and the damaged car did not appear out of place among the other scrapped vehicles, authorities said.
The victims were returning from a trip to Walmart when the crash happened, police said. The roadway was recently paved and had less grip than an older road would have, investigators said.
Friends gathered at the crash on Tuesday, mourning the loss of the two women.
"It is unbelievable," said friend Courtney Craig. "Thinking that they were going to Walmart, you wouldn't assume that they were in a wreck, because where wouldn't anyone see them on the Heights road?"
Messages of concern grew Monday night on Facebook, before the women's bodies were found.
One friend wrote on Carney's Facebook page, "Please let someone know if you're OK."
"Sam was my best friend and Beth. We've known each other since middle school. Anyone who knows us knows we don't do anything without each other," said friend Courtney Craig.
There is no word on funeral arrangements.
