PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Board of Elections announced it will recanvass 52 voting districts before certifying the results of the November election. A recanvass is not the same as a recount.
Elections Division staff will compare the final results from the voting machines to the results on the flash memory cards.
The recanvass will take place on Monday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. in the County Office Building. Any candidate who ran in the presidential or Senate elections may be present or send an attorney on his or her behalf. The entire process will likely take less than two hours.
According to a release by the Board of Elections, 109 recanvass petitions were filed in 91 election districts that did not meet the minimum requirement of three affidavits per election district.
There are more than 1,300 voting districts in Allegheny County. The 52 voting districts involved in the recanvass include:
Allegheny County Elections Division Manager Mark Wolosik said this isn't the first time Allegheny County has done a recanvass.
"2009 and 2011," he said. "It's been some time now. Both of them had to do with a very close race for Superior Court and Commonwealth Court."
The Allegheny County Board of Elections will meet next on Dec. 12.
