PITTSBURGH — Three women who live in the same Pittsburgh apartment complex said they found mold in their apartments again, and it’s a recurring problem that no one is taking seriously.
Residents of the Arlington Heights complex said this is the second time in two years that they’ve had a mold issue. They said their floors, windowsills and personal belongings have become covered in mold, but no one is willing to take care of the problem.
Shiane Smith said she had to throw away everything in her 2-year-old son’s closet, including his coats, clothes and several pairs of shoes. Smith said the mold also got on his car seat and she found mold on her windowsills.
Her neighbor took photos that showed mold on her bathtub and windowsills. Another woman sent photos of her child’s stroller covered in mold.
“We get sick,” one woman said. “I wondered why my son is sick with a cough all the time."
The Arlington Heights complex is owned by the Pittsburgh Housing Authority. Smith said a maintenance worker came by on Tuesday and sprayed a solution on her windows, but that's not enough.
"I think they need to dig into the walls and find the problem,” she said.
11 Investigates was in the same building in the summer of 2015 covering another mold complaint from a different neighbor.
Smith said she believes that it is a recurring problem that needs to be dealt with once and for all.
"I just feel like they're not taking it serious enough,” she said.
