BEAVER, Pa. — The plan for Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness therapists to go on strike on May 6 is currently on hold.
In late April, the union representing the therapists originally announced that their strike would begin on May 6. Thursday they said they have rescinded that plan but remain ready to strike.
Their next bargaining session will take place on May 9, this time involving a federal mediator.
“Our hope is that we can come to a fair contract over the next few sessions and avoid a strike,” said Brandy Haldiman, a physical therapy assistant at Brighton Rehab. “We are prepared to issue another strike notice if necessary. We have to do whatever it takes to be able to provide the quality care our residents deserve and retain the staff necessary for long-term continuity of care.”
Negotiations have been ongoing over the course of the past seven months.
The workers are primarily looking for improved wages
“Striking is a fundamental and legal right of all workers,” said Matthew Yarnell, President of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania. “These union caregivers are within their right to strike and have shown they will act in the interest of their residents’ care – not just for one year or two years, but looking ahead to the next generation of therapists. I stand with the therapists willing to strike unfair labor practices to do what’s right for their residents.”
