MT. PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Burgettstown man is facing charges after running an off-duty sheriff’s deputy off the road in Washington County late Sunday night.

The deputy was driving along a rural stretch of Route 519 in Mt. Pleasant Township, when he said a car suddenly swerved into his lane.%

The deputy told Channel 11’s Cara Sapida that he didn’t even have time to react -- he was run off the road and slammed on his brakes just before hitting a telephone pole.

“I wasn't sure if this was some sort of threat on law enforcement,” he said.

Police said the driver, Brandon McGivern, of Burgettstown, then reversed and started driving away.

The deputy was able to get back on the road and activate his lights and sirens to pull McGivern over.

Officers that were called for backup said McGivern admitted to smoking marijuana, drinking and snorting Xanax.

Brass knuckles, a crack pipe, a marijuana pipe, marijuana and Xanax pills were also found inside of McGivern’s car after officers conducted a search.

McGivern was taken to Washington County Jail and arraigned Tuesday. His bail is set at $5,000
