Burrell High School Retires Fallen Officer's Jersey Number

LOWER BURRELL, Pa.,None — Officer Derek Kotecki's jersey number was retired as part of an emotional night at Burrell High School on Friday.

Kotecki graduated from Burrell High School in 1989, but while he was there, he played basketball and wore the number 52.

The number was retired before the team's game Friday night against Highlands.

Kotecki's youngest son, Alex, and his father, Rich, accepted the honor.

"He just loved basketball," Rich Kotecki said. "He has a son that's coming up right now. He's in seventh grade and he looks like Derek, and even plays like Derek. This was just wonderful what the school did for Derek."

Kotecki was shot and killed while trying to arrest a fugitive at a restaurant parking lot in October.
