PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Robotics, which spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2010, announced a spinoff of its own company— Thoro.ai.

Daniel Beaven, CFO of Carnegie Robotics, said the new company will aim to commercialize its Autonomous Mobile Robotics technology for the cleaning and disinfection equipment industry. This allows for the creation of cleaning machines that can navigate around people in public spaces.

Thoro.ai created the tech in partnership with its customer Nilfisk, a cleaning equipment company, and its Nilfisk Liberty SC50 Scrubber. Beaven said Thoro.ai manufactures the autonomous hardware components in Pittsburgh and then ships those to Nilfisk, which installs it into the machines.
