Pandemic: Most colleges lost enrollment; Pitt, CMU grew

PITTSBURGH — By any measure, the University of Pittsburgh’s fall 2021 class is one for the record books.

It was the largest incoming group of Pennsylvania students in history, and it had the largest freshmen class of non-Pennsylvanians. Despite the pandemic challenges, international enrollment bounced back, comprising the second-largest cohort from abroad.

The result: A freshman class of 4,927 and record enrollment.

According to Marc Harding, vice provost for enrollment at the university, Pitt had a record number of first-year applicants for the past school year and is on pace to top that record this year.
