According to Erie News Now, 73-year-old Terry Payne of Meadville is accused of spilling the drain cleaner on a pit bull, Chopper, and a smaller dog named Goldie.

An Erie-area animal shelter received the dogs after law enforcement uncovered the situation, posting on their social media “it was some of the worst injuries we have ever seen” in the 15 years the shelter had been operating. Shelter officials said the injuries were so severe, that specialty care was needed.

The two dogs suffered burns on their back, neck and ears and Goldie had burns over 80% of her body with exposed muscle and tendons.

The animals were rushed to the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center for further treatment.

Shelter officials said the animals are being cared for, but have a long recovery ahead of them. They are both expected to survive and could be discharged within the next few weeks.

Payne has been charged with two counts of neglect of animals, according to Erie News Now, and each charge carries a penalty of up to a year in jail.
