CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man accused of stealing a crossbow from a Cranberry Township store Wednesday afternoon led police on a mile and a half chase before eventually pulling over, authorities said.

Cranberry Township police said Matthew Carothers’ ordeal began when he stole a crossbow from the Field & Stream. Customers told officers they thought it was odd when they saw Carothers use duct tape to cover his license plate, so they called police.%

When police arrived at the store’s parking lot, Carothers took off in his vehicle.

“He led us on a chase a little more than a mile and a half,” Cranberry Township Police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino said.

Police wouldn't call it a high-speed but Carothers drove over the speed limit and weaved in and out of traffic on busy Freedom Road around 3:45 p.m.

“We're very lucky no one was hurt,” Mascellino said.

Police said Carothers eventually pulled over on a side street and was taken into custody. He faces a number of charges.
