PITTSBURGH — A man charged in a DUI crash that killed a 6-year-old girl who was standing in a driveway in Shaler Township in September 2015 took a plea deal Tuesday.
Travis Grayson, then 20 years old, was the driver of a car that hit Ava Campbell and her mother, who were standing in the driveway with a second child. Campbell was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Grayson will spend five to 10 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, according to the terms of Tuesday’s plea deal.
“It's been tough. It's going to continue to be tough. I feel like they're going to get a little justice out of this, maybe some closure, hopefully,” Amy Ober, a friend of the Campbell family, said.
According to a criminal complaint, Grayson told police that he had consumed at least 10 beers before the accident. He also said that he smoked a bowl of marijuana earlier in the day.
The district attorney said Grayson was driving 85 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
Grayson was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, third-degree murder, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, three counts of recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and careless driving.
