Fallen officer's son gets his father's old patrol car

COLORADO — It was the worst day of this teenager's life. His father, a sheriff's deputy in Colorado, was killed in the line of duty.

Five years later, the department put the officer's car up for auction, and all the teen wanted was to drive the car his father served in. How much money could an old Dodge go for, after all?

Deputy Sam Brownlee's patrol car was auctioned off outside the Weld County Sheriff's Office.

Brownlee's son, Tanner Brownlee, had made plans to bid on his fallen father's car.  Yet as bids rolled in, the price soared higher than Tanner Brownlee could afford.

In the back of the room stood Steve Wells, who had a plan of his own. After winning the auction and paying $60,000 for the Dodge Charger, Wells handed the keys to Tanner Brownlee.

The auction raised more than $70,000 for a charity that helps the families of fallen police officers -- the same charity that helped Tanner Brownlee's family after his father was killed.
