HINOJOSA, SPAIN — A small town in Spain was the scene of a chess game played in a farm field, using tractors as chess pieces.
32 tractors took their positions as chess pieces to begin the game Saturday for the second annual event.
Organizers say the chess game is an opportunity to pay tribute to agricultural labor and a call for youngsters to move to the countryside.
The tractors moved over a huge "board" sketched in the field.
The game was played by two youngsters on a regular chess board, but the players used a walkie-talkie to give orders to move the tractors over the land.
Two men driving quads gave directions to the tractor operators representing the kings, queens, knights, rooks, bishops and pawns.
A young Cuban was the winner of the game. He said playing chess has helped him in school and other aspects of his life.
